John has had a love for athletics all his life. As the son of a high school football coach, he focused his attention on football and wrestling in high school. John graduated from Bishop Ready High School in 2003, distinguishing himself as first team All-CCL in football at defensive end. He was also voted Most Improved Player his senior year and was five time defensive player of the week. John played football at Otterbein College his freshman year, but then chose to devote himself to his new passion, strength training and bodybuilding. John graduated from Otterbein College in 2007 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Health Promotion and Fitness and a minor in coaching.
While at Otterbein, John was the first student in the Health Promotion and Fitness Department to have his project accepted into Otterbein’s Distinction Program. The topic was “Effects of a conventional and multi-joint training program on high school football combine performance”. John implemented his training regimen on the Columbus St. Francis DeSales High School football team with great success. John also had the privilege to teach speed and agility at Larry Thomas’ hitting facility in Grove City. Larry Thomas is a former MLB player who is a very successful hitting coach and scout for the Cincinnati Reds.
John was selected to intern at The Ohio State University with the 2007 football team, which won the Big Ten championship and competed for the national championship. While at OSU, John worked side-by-side with former Olympic gold medalist and speed coordinator, Butch Reynolds.
He also had the privilege of working with Eric Licther, Head Football Performance Coach, and Doug Davis, Head Assistant, who also has experience with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. While on staff, John assisted in developing and implementing the strength philosophies of OSU. John enjoyed his one-on-one time with the OSU players and NFL alumni, taking them through their workouts. John also had the opportunity to work the football performance camps at Ohio State for elementary age kids through high school. The focus of the camps was to build base strength and speed with a heavy emphasis on proper techniques. The high school camp also focused on preparing those athletes for high school football combines. In addition, John participated in the clinics for high school football coaches; his responsibility was to explain Ohio State’s football performance philosophy and answer any questions.
For the past several years, John has devoted himself to the sport of bodybuilding. Under the tutelage of Jack Ohlers, NPC National Level Bodybuilder, John has learned how to develop and implement diet and training programs for both off-season and pre-contest. John competed in the Ohio State Bodybuilding Championships in the fall of 2007, placing 6th in the heavyweight division. John also competed in the Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix, where he finished 3rd in the men’s open heavyweight division. He also placed 2nd in the junior division. John will be competing in the Mike Francois Classic in May of 2008.
John is also a co-owner of L.I.F.T. with Andy and Ashleigh Katzenmoyer.
