The Meaning of Health
By Ashleigh Katzenmoyer
Health is an experience of a lifetime, bringing purpose and meaning into an individual’s life. Living a healthy lifestyle means giving your body what it needs, such as proper diet, maintained exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. To have health means, to have responsibility for your own well-being, along with being in a state of homeostasis (balance). Good health brings a feeling of freedom and acceptance from all our physical, emotional, and mental needs, compared to the negative feelings which result from stress and illness. The word “health” is a constant reminder of our day-to-day experience of freedom from disease and sickness.
Everyone is a patient under some kind of health care practitioner. Each individual patient at some point in his/her life will deal with a health issue or crisis with their own body, a parent(s), or maybe their child’s. If an individual is unaware of his/her own body and does not understand the importance of personal health, how can the patient walk away from a doctor’s appointment feeling satisfied that health needs were met? It is critical to understand the diagnosis a doctor gives you, what is being prescribed, and what alternative options you have available to you.
